Chapter 2 Practical 2: Natural vs Managed Ecosystems
🎯 Aim
To differentiate between natural and managed ecosystems by analyzing and interpreting visual characteristics visible on Google Earth Pro or Google Maps.
Principle: An ecosystem is a community of living organisms interacting with their physical environment. Natural Ecosystems (e.g., forests, grasslands, lakes) develop with minimal human intervention and have complex, irregular patterns. Managed Ecosystems (e.g., agricultural fields, plantations, urban parks) are controlled by humans and show regular, geometric patterns. These differences are visible via satellite imagery through shape, texture, color, pattern, and context.
🌲 Natural Ecosystem
- 🌿 Develops with minimal human intervention
- 🔷 Complex, irregular structure
- 🎨 Random, organic patterns
- 🦋 High biodiversity
- 🌳 Examples: Forests, grasslands, lakes, mangroves
🚜 Managed Ecosystem
- 👷 Controlled and modified by humans
- 📐 Simplified, geometric structure
- 📊 Regular, uniform patterns
- 🌾 Lower biodiversity (monocultures)
- 🏙️ Examples: Farmland, plantations, urban parks
🔍 Ecosystem Identification Key
| Characteristic | Natural Ecosystem | Managed Ecosystem |
|---|---|---|
| Shape & Pattern | Irregular, organic, random patterns | Regular, geometric shapes (squares, rectangles, circles) |
| Texture | Rough, coarse, heterogeneous | Smooth, even, homogeneous |
| Color Variability | Multiple shades of green and brown | Uniform color over large areas |
| Boundaries | Gradual, blurred ecotones (transition zones) | Sharp, straight, well-defined edges |
| Context | Connected to other natural landscapes | Surrounded by roads, buildings, human infrastructure |
| Biodiversity (Inferred) | High (complex structure provides many niches) | Low (monocultures dominate) |

💡 Tips for Using Google Earth Pro
1
Historical Imagery: Click the clock icon to see how the area has changed over time. Managed ecosystems often show recent development.
2
Zoom Levels: Zoom in for texture details and zoom out for pattern recognition. Both scales provide important clues.
3
Measure Tool: Use the ruler tool to measure field sizes. Regular sizes often indicate management.
4
3D View: Enable 3D view to better understand topography and land use patterns.
5
Compare Multiple Sites: Look at several examples of each type to train your eye for recognition.
